LOS ANGELES, California: Some 20 homes were destroyed in Southern California this week by a wildfire running down the coast.
According to the Orange County Fire Authority, the destroyed homes were located in Laguna Niguel. The fire now covers an area of some 200 acres, adding that 60 fire departments are battling the flames.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department said evacuation orders have been issued for Coronado Pointe Drive, Vista Court and Via Las Rosa in the Pacific Island area, and voluntary evacuations are in place for Laguna Beach residents in the Balboa Nyes and Portafina.
Last week, Orange County Fire Department Chief Brian Fennessy said there are no reports of civilian or firefighter casualties, adding that the crews fighting the blaze are starting to see the fire recede and progress is expected in the coming days.
The cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation is underway, he added, noting that it started quickly and moved upslope over steep terrain, proving a challenge for fire fighting crews to access.
With ground cover being very dry throughout the West, blazes like the Coastal Fire will be more commonplace, Fennessy said, adding that when winds couple with dry fuel, "fire is going to run on us."
Laguna Niguel is located south of Laguna Beach and some 25 miles down the coast from Huntington Beach.
